Make the PDF Download - a background process

Downloading a PDF can take more than a few minutes. It doesn't seem to consume too much CPU / RAM, so it would make sense to make it available for download in the background, without restricting the work in the meantime.
It's also impossible to cancel the PDF export in cases when it freezes - so it crashes the entire application, which is unfortunate.
